Mercedes-Benz sells its own extended warranty, but the version you can buy depends on whether your existing cover is still running. Once it has lapsed, your options narrow.

How long is a Mercedes warranty?

Three years from the date of first registration, with no mileage cap, across the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range. Vans are the same, three years with no mileage restriction. Servicing must follow Mercedes-Benz specifications to keep it valid.

There is no five-year Mercedes warranty in the UK. Longer cover exists in some other markets, but it does not apply to a car bought here.

Electric and plug-in hybrid models are the exception worth knowing about. The high-voltage battery carries separate, longer cover of its own, so an EQ owner reaching year three still has battery protection while everything else falls out of warranty on the same day as any other Mercedes.

Why do I need a Mercedes car warranty?

Because of what our claims data shows happens in year four onwards, and how it is shaped.

Mercedes owners tend to claim often rather than catastrophically. Across the 25 Mercedes models in our Reliability Index, electrical work is the dominant claim category, running at around 30% of all Mercedes claims at an average of £464 a time. On some models it takes over completely: 48.18% of GLC-Class claims and 51.06% of SLK claims are electrical. More than half of everything that goes wrong on an SLK is an electrical fault.

Suspension is the steady second at around 22% of claims across the range.

Neither of those is ruinous on its own. The problem is arrival rate. Two or three of them in a year comfortably exceeds what cover would have cost.

Then there is the tail. It is short but severe. SL engine repairs average £14,418.31, the highest single figure anywhere in our index, on just 1.72% of claims. G-Class gearbox repairs average £5,053.22 and account for 20% of all claims on that model, which is not a rarity at all. The GLC-Class averages £4,172.72 on engine work and the CLA £3,120.48 on gearboxes.

The pattern runs against what most people assume

The two lowest-scoring Mercedes models in our index are the G-Class at 1 and the GL-Class at 1.2, followed by the V-Class at 3.2, the S-Class at 3.5 and the M-Class at 4. The A-Class scores 8.1, the SLK 8.2, the SLC 8.3, the GLS 8.4 and the CLK 8.5. The cars people buy expecting the engineering to justify the price are the ones our claims data flags as most expensive to run once cover lapses.

Which plan suits a Mercedes:
Plan A is our most extensive, with Plans B and C covering progressively narrower component lists. Because Mercedes claims concentrate in electrical and suspension components, a plan with broad listed-component cover generally suits a Mercedes better than a narrow one. That is a judgement from our claims data rather than a rule, so check the component schedule for your model.

Lite plans cost less and are structured around breakdown and recovery scenarios rather than every listed component. If your Mercedes is a second car doing low mileage and you would rather absorb the smaller bills yourself, Lite is worth comparing. If it is a GLC, an SLK or a Vito, where electrical claims arrive regularly, the fuller plans earn their cost faster.

Model, age, mileage and plan. A six-year-old A-Class and a six-year-old GLE do not price the same, because our index shows they do not cost the same to repair.

Two things in the table matter more than the rest

The first is what happens if you let cover lapse. Mercedes restricts its monthly and 24-month policies to cars that already hold a warranty, and quoting requires a PIN from a renewal letter. If your three years ran out last year and the letter went in the bin, your options with Mercedes are narrower than they would have been in month 35. 

The second is the market-value ceiling. Mercedes pays up to what your car is currently worth at the point you claim, minus your excess. Market value falls every year. Repair costs do not. On an older S-Class with a £2,079 average engine repair, or an SL where engine work averages £14,418.31, that ceiling arrives sooner than most owners expect. 

Mercedes does not publish a rate card, so the only honest comparison is two live quotes for your own car.

How long is a Mercedes-Benz warranty in the UK?

Three years from first registration with no mileage limit, across the passenger car and van ranges. It requires servicing in line with Mercedes-Benz specifications. Plug-in hybrid and electric models carry separate, longer cover on the high-voltage battery. 

Does Mercedes offer a five-year warranty?

Not in the UK. Mercedes-Benz provides three years with unlimited mileage on new cars sold here. Five-year cover exists in some other markets, including Australia, but it does not apply to a car bought in Britain.

Can I buy Mercedes-Benz Extended Warranty if my cover has already run out?

Only in limited form. Mercedes restricts its monthly and 24-month policies to vehicles that already hold a warranty, and you need a PIN from your renewal email or letter to get a quote. Is an AMG or Maybach covered on the same terms?

Not by Mercedes. Mercedes-Benz Extended Warranty caps mileage at 120,000 miles generally, but at 100,000 miles for AMG and Maybach vehicles. Our own limit is 120,000 miles regardless of model, so there is a 20,000-mile window where we can cover an AMG that Mercedes no longer will. Worth checking your mileage before assuming the manufacturer route is open.

What does "up to market value" mean for an older Mercedes?

 It means the most Mercedes will pay on a claim is what your car is worth on the day you claim, minus your excess. That works well on a three-year-old car. It works less well as the car ages, because depreciation is steady while repair costs are not. Our index puts average SL engine repairs at £14,418.31 and G-Class gearbox repairs at £5,053.22, both of which can approach or exceed the value of an older example.

Can I use an independent Mercedes specialist?

With us, yes. You can use any garage in our network of over 10,000, or nominate your own, provided the repair is authorised before work starts. Mercedes-Benz Extended Warranty repairs go through Mercedes-Benz dealerships using genuine parts. Servicing at an independent does not damage a Mercedes service history as long as it follows the manufacturer schedule with correct parts and proper invoices.

Are Mercedes electrical faults covered?

Listed mechanical, electrical and electronic components are included, which is the category generating around 30% of all Mercedes claims in our index. What is covered on your car depends on your plan's component schedule, so check it before you buy rather than after a fault appears.

Do you cover the Sprinter, Vito and Viano?

Yes, and the data differs sharply from the passenger cars. The Sprinter's biggest claim category is the engine at 40% of claims, with gearbox repairs averaging £3,047.40. The Vito is electrical-dominated at 41.79%. Commercial use carries its own terms, so start with our van warranty page.

How do I check my Mercedes warranty?

 If your car is under three years old from first registration it is still covered. To confirm the exact registration date, use the DVLA vehicle enquiry service or your V5C. A Mercedes-Benz retailer can confirm the full position from your VIN, including remaining battery cover on an EQ model and anything a previous owner extended.

How do I make a claim?

Log in to your MotorEasy account, go to 'My Purchased Products' and click 'Report a fault', as soon as something feels wrong. Why might a claim be declined?

Usually because the failed component is not listed on your plan, or because service history requirements were not met. Missing invoices are the more common of the two. Your Mercedes needs servicing in line with the manufacturer schedule for its age and mileage, with paperwork to prove it, and a valid MOT. If we decline, we tell you why.
